Karen Bernal

Artist / Founder of Circo Sentido

Research and creation on the merger of the performing arts and circus is one of the great passions of Karen Bernal, as well as the growth and learning that comes from the generous exchange with other artists.

Karen Bernal is artist, director of Circo Sentido and certified yoga teacher. For the past 20 years Karen has dedicated her life to the performing arts and circus. She has been part of highly acclaimed international companies such as Cirque du Soleil and Teatro Sunil, a Swiss-Italian company for whom she currently works. She has nurtured the professionalism she has encountered there, which has lit a desire to work in Mexico at that same high level.

After her studies at the Academy of Dance at the Mexican National Institute of Fine Arts, she has received a FONCA-grant in the category of Circus Arts (2003-2004). This initiated a project in which the relationship between dance and circus was explored. In 2005 this project was named Encuentro Bajo la Carpa*. For many years, the project has been a fruitful cooperation between the Circo Sentido Collective and Silvestre Mejía, who is currently the director of DFproducciones.

Thanks to the dedication of Karen, she has managed to convey to her dream to colleagues and co-workers year after year. With the Encuentro Bajo la Carpa she has created a space for creativity, an honest and fruitful exchange between teachers, students, artists and production crew. Without their support, dedication and warm-heartedness, an event of that nature would not be possible.
