International Laboratory of Arts and Circus / Encuentro Internacional Bajo la Carpa

What is the International Laboratory of Arts and Circus?

Our biennial workshop series. The mission of the International Laboratory of Arts and Circus is to create an environment where scenic arts and circus arts are united, where people of different artistic backgrounds and idiosyncrasies coexist in a environment of non-competition, non-violence, with appreciation of the individual and collective effort. Confidence, honesty, solidarity and discipline are the foundation of investigation, training and artistic creation.

The first edition of the International Laboratory of Arts and Circus took place in 2005 and will soon be organized for the 8th time. The project gathers international teachers and various circus disciplines in intensive workshops, with the soul intent to contribute to the practice of circus arts in Mexico and to enrich the relationships between the performing arts.

During the course of a few weeks theoretical and practical knowledge based on a systematic curriculum is exchanged through tested teaching methods. Each year the workshop closes with a circus performance in which teachers and/or students present their work to the public, a valuable and essential step to further nourish their art.

Over the years, the International Laboratory of Arts and Circus has received international and national teachers, from Germany, Argentina, Spain (Barcelona), Brazil, Canada, France, Hungary, England, Mexico, Spain (Basque Country) and the US, giving classes in aerial techniques (trapeze, hoop, rope Indiana, fabrics), hand-to-hand techniques, tightrope, body-to-body techniques, Chinese pole, dance, physical theater, stage direction, playwright of the image, stage presence, chiropractics and treatment of injuries.

The 7th International Laboratory of Arts and Circus took place from the 17th until the 30th of January 2011 at the Centro Nacional de las Artes (CENART), México D.F. The dates of the 8th edition will be announced as soon as they are set.
